Sonic Essence

„Sonic Essence“ is an electro-acoustical research project which I’m working on since 2011. The project is about everyday objects. Using various recording techniques I capture sounds produced by respectively on these objects.

In so doing I created a sample library consisting of sounds which are very diverse in terms of sound characteristic and recognition value. In general I’m mostly interested in those sounds which don’t reveal their origin right away but rather show a hidden side of the objects they were taken from.

Schall und Rauch – Version Umlaut is a composition for an ensemble of instruments and samples. It was premiered on January 26th 2018 in Paris.

Simon Rummel – melodica
Antonin Gerbal – percussion
Sébastien Beliah – double bass
Florian Bergmann – sampler

For the interdisciplinary installation „paysages façonnés“ I created a 17 minute long composition out of these sounds. The composition was made in close collaboration with the french photographer Elma Riza. For her part she she took close-up pictures from everyday objects and surroundings. From the pictures she created a video that formed the visual part of the installation. The work was premiered at the International Umlaut Festival Berlin in October 31st, 2014.

twp_1_8575_webFor the music of the contemporary dance performance “The Wood Project” I worked exclusively with sounds which derived from wooden objects. Those included random sonic material and field recordings from the black forest as well as intentionally manipulated wooden plates of different size and quality and single tones and melodies from a Marimba.

On November 24th, 2011 the piece by the choreographer Felix Bürkle and with the performers Kajsa Bohlin, Simon Carrot and Sarah Lutz premiered  at the Pumpenhaus Münster. Following shows took place at the Tanzhaus NRW Düsseldorf and at the Favoriten Festival Dortmund.

SE1Playing in duo with the percussionist Hannes Lingens I expired the possibilities of using the sample library for free improvisation. We played a couple of concerts, a.o. in Freiburg im Breisgau and in Berlin at the Ballhaus Rixdorf.
